BRISTOL

The Bristol Partnership with the support of Bristol City Council has launched a new initiative to accelerate progress towards making Bristol a green capital: a low carbon city with a high quality life.

The aim of the initiative is to galvanise voluntary action within the city and achieve substantial cuts in city-wide carbon dioxide emissions. To achieve this organisations in the city have been invited to sign the Green Capital Pledge, which then gives free access to specialist environmental support services to advise on cutting emissions.

As part of its pledge the City Council itself has drawn up an action plan which includes many actions leading to lower carbon dioxide emissions. These include plans for better quality bus services, replacing old school buildings, investing in biomass boilers to replace old gas and oil boilers in schools, improving the council housing stock and promoting energy efficiency to home owners, guidance for developers for new homes and reducing waste in the city.
